How to Get Motivated

When you work from home (and even when you don’t work from home!) you sometimes have days when it’s hard to get motivated. I thought I’d share with you some tips that I’ve found helpful when I’m sitting at my computer staring out the window.

  1. Make a list of all the tasks that need doing today.
  2. Begin with the most urgent or difficult task. You’ll feel so good when you’ve finished, you’ll be encouraged to keep going.
  3. If you’re feeling stressed and don’t know where to start, take a deep breath and calm yourself. Prioritise your list and just start at the beginning. Remember: there is only so much one person can do.
  4. Stick your latest credit card statement somewhere visible as an incentive!
  5. Put some quick, easy tasks at the top of your to-do list if necessary, just to get you going.
  6. Find ways to make tasks fun.
  7. Focus on the satisfaction of knowing you’ve achieved all you were capable of at the end of the day.
  8. Allow time to rest and reward yourself (preferably AFTER you’ve tackled some of the things on your list… not as a way of procrastinating.

I’d love to hear how others get motivated so please feel free to share your ideas.

Hi Donnamarie, I’ve always made a list of everything that needs to be done too. I don’t always get everything done, but like you, I feel such a sense of achievement when I do get stuff done.
I’m on a group with “FlyLady - meaning finally loving yourself, and she says to do things in 15 minute time slots and then stop and do something else. I sometimes follow that too. (only sometimes) lol.

I used to be with FlyLady too and I think she’s fabulous. I’m pretty organised (too much so if you ask my family) but still got some great ideas for her.

Hi Donnamarie, thanks for the tips, This morning I’ve dropped my boy at day care, put a load of washing on, had a coffee and read a gossip mag and decided (finally!) I’d better get to work (after checking out mumspace!). You’ve motivated me to sort out my to do list and get cracking!!!

Glad I could help :)

Another thing I focus on is getting stuck into work and ‘must-dos’ early in the day, usually from around 6am because that’s when I’m most productive. I think knowing when you’re most productive and working then helps too. I like to get through my list first, knowing that I can rest and do the fun stuff at the end. Mind you, I try to watch Dr Phil at 12noon each weekday - hey, a girl’s got to have a lunch break! :)
